Flashback: 1989 Worlds at Chambery France
My bike is a LeMond Chambery and is named for this race. 1989 was the year of Laurent Fignon and Greg LeMond. Fignon was so cool back in those days since he was just so strong and smug about it. The waving pony-tail with he receding hairline just added to the menacing look. Not to mention the wire-rimmed glasses which gave him the unoriginal nickname of “The Professor”. If he was a studious type he would have paid more attention to aerodynamics and at least worn an aero helmet during the final time trial of the Tour de France.
The Worlds in 1989 was great, not only for horrendous rainy conditions. The finish contained some powerhouse guys such as Fignon and Sean Kelly. Once the group got back together the smart money would be on Sean Kelly, but word was that his Vitus Aluminum bike was too flexy. Plus, LeMond is not a bad sprinter himself.
Lemod was riding a Bottechia branded bike that was actually a carbon TVT frame. The same frame was used by Pedro Delgado to win the 1988 Tour and was branded as a Pinarello. Ahh, the early days of Carbon when it was so exotic.
Laurent Fignon was greatest cyclist….
