The “battle of sprinters” is taking shape as Tom Boonen took the first round in the Tour of Qatar. Boonen took the overall lead after winning the stage beating Alessandro Petacchi in a mass gallup to the line.

Stage 1 of the Tour of Qatar featured a team time trial with all team leaving the TT bikes at home in favor of a full road setup. Quick-Step and Milram were the top two teams as they were able to get their sprint lead out trains running for 6kms. Steven De Jongh took the honors of the first leaders jersey even though the team were working for David Vigano who lost his father one week ago. Vigano broke off from the team finishing 44 seconds behind.
